A day in the life …
Officers at LG Regulation liaise with local authorities and government departments to work on new and existing legislation. They enable local authorities to work towards a consistent approach, and coordinate local government communications to central government.
A typical day for an animal health and welfare policy officer, for example, might consist of a meeting with Defra about avian flu contingency planning, followed by writing some guidance for local authorities on the Animal Welfare Act. They might have a catch-up with their team leader on their workload, before working on a news release with the media team.
Policy officers focus on getting their guidance out to local authorities via the LG Regulation website and email system. So they would also write emails for distribution, as well as covering information for the website. All work would be interspersed with dealing with telephone and email queries.
